"with as a verb" comes from Elaine Castillo’s book America Is Not the Heart. she shares the line when explaining how the Ilocano word kadwa loosely translates to companion in English, but the translation not really doing it justice. She says it’s more like "with-ing."

i flagged it as a way to look at how we can be really with someone or a group of people, supportive but beyond that. a feeling of interwovenness. being with as a verb seems like as connected as you might get. i first applied this lens to being with dear friends separated by much time and space, but lately started to think about being with the Palestinian people as a verb and what that might look like. it brings me visceral feelings of pain and support and hope and love.

for me, these songs mirrored some of what I’m feeling right now. the earth calling out, flowers still existing or trying to exist or that will live in the future, and kites getting to soar and experience their freedom. listening is feeling like a way to center being with those facing this war.
